India’s telemedicine moves into the cloud

Confident in the availability of Microsoft’s Windows (r) Azure (r) cloud service, India has made the bold move to try telemedicine across public and private cloud services. No longer reliant on expensive ISDN telephone lines to connect the patient to the health care provider, the Medical Informatics Group of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Pune, India, has launched a telemedicine suite called the Mercury Nimbus Suite that uses cloud services. Cloud services use public and private Internet connections such as common broadband found in homes and businesses to connect the patient to the healthcare provider.
