Since the controversy around access to antiretrovirals for HIV/AIDS erupted in the 1990s, the profile of issues around intellectual property and access to new treatments and vaccines in poor countries has taken centre stage. Today, health equity and access to treatments, together with the associated issues around patents and intellectual property, are a major concern within the global health community.
