The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) has, since 1996, worked with governments, the WHO and others to develop a vaccine to protect against HIV. The risk of misunderstandings and deliberate miscommunication is high with any vaccine, and especially so with an experimental vaccine against HIV.
IAVI asked Baird’s CMC to assess the initiative’s perception amongst key stakeholders, to investigate any weaknesses and to produce a strategic plan for building on this reputational map.
Baird’s CMC closely worked on training and skill sharing programmes programmes with staff at IAVI and at partner organisations and governments to implement the plan. We worked particularly closely with national and regional programmes in Kenya, India, South Africa and the USA. Baird’s CMC associates, with their decades-long experience in crisis communications and staff training, helped IAVI to prepare messaging and simulations that fit with their strategic plan. Baird’s CMC also helped IAVI build a sustainable, internal crisis response mechanism so that they would not be caught unawares in the event of any negative media reporting.
