A huge shift has taken place in reproductive health and population programs over the last 20 years, with increasing recognition of reproductive rights as human rights, the recognition of unsafe abortion as a major public health concern, and the move away from sterilisation and population targets in family planning initiatives.
Baird’s CMC associates have helped steer the process of discovering the link between family planning and poverty. Many Baird’s CMC associates were involved in work at the landmark 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt. This interest has continued through extensive work on unsafe abortion issues with the Hewlett Foundation as well as involvement in the major ‘Women Deliver’ conference held in London in 2007.
